A heartbreaking tragedy in Enid, Oklahoma has sparked renewed concern over dangerous online trends after a 15-year-old girl died following an attempt at the so-called “Benadryl challenge,” according to her father.
The teen’s father, Richard Presson, shared that his daughter attempted the viral challenge—which involves taking excessive amounts of the allergy medication Benadryl in an effort to experience hallucinations or a “high.” Within a short period, her condition deteriorated rapidly.
According to Presson, his daughter was placed on life support in the intensive care unit after losing all brain function. Despite medical efforts, she tragically passed away on June 26, 2026.
Health authorities, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, have long warned that taking high doses of diphenhydramine can cause severe complications such as heart problems, seizures, coma, and death.
The incident has also drawn attention to social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube, both of which state that they prohibit and remove content promoting dangerous challenges or harmful behavior. Searches related to such trends are often redirected to safety resources.
Presson is now urging parents and guardians to stay vigilant about online content and trends their children may encounter.
He emphasized the importance of awareness, saying that understanding these challenges and recognizing warning signs could help prevent similar tragedies.
This devastating loss serves as a powerful reminder of the real-world dangers associated with viral internet trends and the importance of education, communication, and supervision when it comes to online activity.
