The Ribera del Duero wine community is mourning the devastating loss of Iván Sanz Cid, the general director of Dehesa de los Canónigos winery, who died in a tragic single-vehicle traffic accident alongside his wife and two of their children. The accident occurred on the A-67 highway near the municipality of Herrera de Pisuerga in Palencia at approximately 4:20 p.m. The family was returning home from a trip to Cantabria when their vehicle reportedly left the roadway and rolled over several times. Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Iván Sanz Cid was 48 years old. His wife, 45, and two of their three children, aged 17 and 14, also lost their lives in the accident. Their youngest daughter, aged 9, survived the crash and was airlifted to a hospital in Burgos, where she remains in serious condition. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. According to Spain’s Central Government Sub-delegation, preliminary information and eyewitness accounts suggest that driver drowsiness is being considered as the leading hypothesis, although the investigation is ongoing.
Sanz Cid was widely respected within the Ribera del Duero wine industry. He served as the general director of Dehesa de los Canónigos, one of the region’s best-known wineries, founded by his parents. The family business was led by the second generation, with Iván overseeing the winery’s management while his sister, Belén Sanz, directed its winemaking operations. The tragedy has deeply affected the Ribera del Duero community, where colleagues, friends, and wine professionals are remembering the Sanz family for their dedication to Spanish winemaking and their lasting contribution to one of the country’s most prestigious wine regions.
